MO Poetry Slam Springfield
is Sending a team to the
2012 National Poetry Slam!!!
MO Poetry is looking to send a team to the 2012 National Poetry Slam (NPS), which will take place in Charlotte, NC during August. The team will consist of four poets and an alternate who will travel to Charlotte to represent us in this incredible competition. In order to determine who these poets will be, we will be having two competitions, one that takes place over many months at our regular slam and a second one night event.
NPS Team Qualification Rules:
The first three members of the team will be chosen through the following process:
At each slam in November, December, February, March and April;
poets will be awarded points on the following basis:
Competing in the slam and not making the top three = 1 point
Placing third in the slam = 2 points
Placing second in the slam = 3 points
Placing first in the slam = 4 points
The three poets with the highest scores at the end of the April slam will be on the team for NPS. If there is a tie which leaves more than three poets qualified for the team, there will be a single poem tiebreaker round before the qualifier slam in May. Only the tied poets will compete with the poets not making the team then having the option to compete for the last slot in the tournament.
Then the last spot on the team and the alternates spot will be selected by tournament in May the winner of the tournament will take the fourth slot on the team and the second place poet will be the alternate for the team.
The May tournament will be four rounds of three minute poems with poets eliminated after each round. The night of the tournament, the poets who have already won a spot on the team will feature before the tournament.
Team Members must be a member of PSI to participate at the National Poetry Slam.
Upon being selected for the team, all poets, including the alternate(s), will be required to work on both poetry and fundraising for NPS.
The work on fundraising may include performing poetry at various events and participating in other functions set up to raise money to defray the costs of attending the tournament. MO Poetry is committed to paying the entry fee for NPS, but cannot guarantee any additional financial assistance towards travel and lodging, though we will try to raise that money.
The work on poetry will require all qualified poets to meet and at least weekly between the May election tournament and the August date of NPS with a maximum of two unexcused absences from practice. These meetings will be for writing, work-shopping, and rehearsing individual and group poems for NPS.
